Gastric electrical stimulation: A new treatment option for children with chronic gastroparesis
Most children with gastroparesis symptoms respond well to dietary changes, medication or therapeutic endoscopic procedures. When these therapies are insufficient, gastric electrical stimulation may be helpful. Our Multidisciplinary Motility Clinic now offers gastric electrical stimulation – our neurogastroenterologists and pediatric surgeons provide special expertise in this new therapy.
The gastric electrical stimulator (2”x2”) delivers mild electrical impulses that help to alleviate symptoms. After a test phase, with your patient tracking and rating symptoms, the stimulator is implanted surgically if symptoms improve during the test phase. Children with gastroparesis who receive this therapy, through either short- or long-term use, usually experience substantial improvement of symptoms.
