Admission and Transfer Center: Making Admissions and Transfers as Seamless as Possible

The Admission and Transfer Center serves as a centralized access point for direct admissions and hospital-to-hospital transfers.

Direct admissions can be initiated in two ways:

  1. By calling 513-636-XFER (9337).

  2. Through a Bed Request Form order in Epic for established Cincinnati Children’s patients.

Nurses serving as Flow Coordinators answer calls to the Admission and Transfer Center to begin gathering details about possible admissions.  Next, referring providers are connected to the appropriate attending who would be accepting the patient.  During this call, it will be determined if the patient can be directly admitted safely.  If the patient can be admitted directly, Flow Coordinators will take care of the logistics and ensure the family receives a call with specific details about where and when to arrive.

The goal is for referring providers to make a single phone call to discuss the case and experience hold times no longer than 5 minutes. If the Cincinnati Children’s provider is not available within 5 minutes, the Flow Coordinators will call the referring provider back.

This streamlined process aims to improve patient access, flow, capacity management, and communication between teams. These enhancements contribute to faster and more efficient patient intake.
