Penicillin Allergy Testing Service (PATS) - when and why
When should I recommend Penicillin testing to my patients? There is an opportunity to increase awareness with families as we approach summer well visits.
As Dr. Shelly Voet stated recently- “There are a lot of benefits to officially testing kids before they graduate out of our pediatric practices (since >95% of labeled penicillin allergies are NOT allergic when retested). De-labeling unnecessary penicillin allergies positively affects the trajectory of your patient’s health for a lifetime.”
Case in point- teens in pediatric practices will get clindamycin for their wisdom teeth extraction if they have not had their allergy label addressed by a simple amoxicillin challenge in the PATS office. The Talking Points tool will help you navigate common questions families may have while the PATS parent handout is a resource for families to take home.
