Pediatric Antibiotic Allergy Testing Service (PATS) at Cincinnati Children’s: Supporting Best Outcomes at Every Stage

PATS NEW Name – Same acronym, but now known as the Pediatric Antibiotic Allergy Testing Service; reflecting the expansion of antibiotic allergy testing as we continue to meet the challenges of antimicrobial stewardship in pediatric patients.  Antibiotic allergy testing typically involves a safe, one-time, in-clinic oral challenge for most oral antibiotics. We offer appointments Monday through Friday at Main and Liberty Campuses, along with select days each month at Green, Fairfield, Kentucky, Anderson, and Mason Neighborhood Locations.   Appointments are also available at the Mobile Care Unit currently serving West Clermont.

Our Liberty and Main campuses allow testing for most common oral antibiotics and skin testing for most parenteral antibiotics (i.e. cefazolin, ceftriaxone, and synthetic penicillin). All sites offer oral challenges to amoxicillin, Augmentin, and Keflex.

NEW Acute Care Allergy Services (ACAS) for patients who need rapid access to subspecialty care-

  • Patients with a current antibiotic-associated reaction.  PATS has dedicated appointments daily (typically by Telemedicine) to help patients and caregivers manage reactions. We continue to offer support through our “wrap-around” service; follow-up calls/check-ins from allergy nurses and access to after-hours allergists for the duration of the reaction.

  • Patients with a confirmed infection needing treatment with an antibiotic they are currently allergic to. We offer same-day/next-day “sick visit” challenges so children can go home on the most preferred antibiotic course.

All referrals can be made to “PATS”.  For Acute Care Allergy Service (ACAS), please have families contact us directly to begin the triage process and indicate “ACAS” or “Acute Care Allergy Service” on your PATS referral. The PATS clinical team can be reached directly at 513-517-7287 (PATS) or by emailing us at PATS@cchmc.org
