Letter from Shelly Voet, MD - Executive Community Physician Leader
January 22, 2023
Dear fellow community PCPs,
I hope all of you are well. Thanks for taking the time to read Synapse. This issue includes several educational opportunities for providers, as well as parent resources such as the ADHD Patient and Parent Classes updated for 2023.
Infectious Diseases - Flu cases have come down abruptly in kids with the holiday break. Our infectious disease colleagues shared that November and December hospital admissions included an increase in both invasive Group A strep (iGAS) and Strep pneumoniae infections. In the community, there are continued shortages of antibiotics in suspension forms. Amox-clauv and clindamycin (if PCN allergic) are appropriate alternatives for community acquired pneumonia (CAP) likely to be caused by S. pneumo if amoxicillin is not available in a weight appropriate dose form.
Pediatric Residency – Dr. Libby Ireson, one of the Chief Residents this year, shared this opportunity for community providers to provide some valuable encouragement to our local pediatricians in training:
The Cincinnati Children's Pediatric Residency Program is celebrating "Resident Appreciation Week" from February 20-24th, 2023. This coincides with the Gold Humanism Honor Society's national "Thank a Resident Day" on February 24th.
Do you have any words of gratitude or encouragement you would like to share with pediatric residents? We will compile these into a presentation to share with residents during Resident Appreciation Week. Thank you for all you do working alongside and educating our residents!

Physician Outreach is welcoming a new community liaison for the East side of town, Sheila Perry. Sheila will be reaching out to practices over the next couple of months and working closely with CPAC members Drs. Shana Alexander and Rick Berger.
Dermatology has continued to partner with us in developing an algorithm for triaging referrals as they continue to work on expanding their provider base. Given current wait times, Dr. Marathe and her team encourage PCPs to provide as much information as possible in the referral or reach out via PPL or E-Consult if you feel the patient needs to be seen urgently.
Save the dates: The Cincinnati Pediatric Society is hosting an Adolescent Medicine Intensive on March 31. For those who are Community Associate medical staff and/or CCHMC residency alumni, the annual medical staff dinner will be held again in person on April 1.
Community Practice Support Tools – These guidelines continue to be a great partnership between Physician Outreach (thanks Kristin Kraft and Ellen Georgilis), faculty, and our CPAC group of community providers. New topics coming out soon include Influenza, Bronchiolitis, and Anxiety. Please let us know if there are topics you would like covered by reaching out to me or Kristin Kraft (kristin.kraft@cchmc.org).
Thanks for all you do and Who Dey!
Shelly
