NICU Admission Trend - A helpful tip from Neonatology

During Covid, we observed that moms and babies were being discharged earlier from delivery hospitals. By the end of May, there was a noticeable increase in readmissions to the Neonatal Unit. Those admissions of interest were hypothermic admits. Hypothermic infants sent to the CCHMC-NICU necessitate a series of tests, and most of the patients are found to be well and discharged with the diagnosis of hypothermia. We surmise, a possible connection to the lapse of time between parents undressing their infants in preparation of being seen by their provider. If it is possible to minimize the time infant are undressed prior to assessment, this may help to reduce a hypothermic event.
