E-Consult Ordering in Epic Link

Have you heard about E-Consult ordering? 

E-Consult Ordering was launched just over a year ago in response to PCP feedback about the desire to reach faculty more easily.  The E-Consult Ordering system allows PCPs to ask non-urgent clinical questions with a 3-day (or less) turnaround. 

In its first year, E-Consult ordering was used by 185 PCPs who generated 1,250 questions for Children’s faculty.  There are currently 27 divisions participating; the most recent addition is NICU Follow-Up Clinic.

The E-Consult system has proved to be a good complement to the urgent communication available via Physician Priority Link (PPL) which connects callers to faculty same day; and sometimes in less than 5 minutes.  The data for E-Consult Ordering has shown little impact on the number of PPL calls, suggesting that less-urgent questions may have gone unanswered or answered another way.    We are happy to create an avenue for connecting PCPs with faculty in this meaningful way.
