A Message from Shelly Voet, MD
April 24, 2022
Greetings to all of you. Thanks for taking the time to read Synapse. This issue has information about educational opportunities, including the timely virtual Mental Health Symposium (5/13/22) and a CPS Quarterly CME on Screening and Safety Planning for Mental Health Patients (5/19/22). There is also a great article in the recent issue of Inspire introducing the new COO of CCHMC, Dr. Evie Alessandrini.
COVID-19 – Hospitalizations fortunately have remained low and stable recently despite a recent slight uptick in cases locally. If you missed the Weech Lecture Grand Rounds about vaccines by guest Dr. Paul Offit on April 12, you can view it HERE. To support PCPs in ongoing efforts to vaccinate children, the Physician Outreach team worked with Ndidi Unaka, Jeff Anderson, and Patty Manning to provide a Vaccine toolkit for PCPs HERE.
Hospital Medicine – Our CPAC group met with Pat Brady MD from the Division of Hospital Medicine this month to review upcoming studies which involve the hospital to home transition. The first, the GET2Home study, is a CCHMC only study which will enroll hospitalized medically complex patients (based on PMCA model) in either standard discharge planning versus a bundled intervention which would include additional contact points with PCPs. The study has been piloted for 2 years and will begin official enrollment in September. It may be helpful to inform your practice team as well.
Communication with PCPs – Under Camille Graham’s leadership, CPAC and hospital providers developed a tool for hospital providers called “Guiding Principles for PCP Communication”. This month, we revised this guide to reflect current processes HERE. The updated tool has recently been shared with leaders in the residency, fellowship, medical and surgical staff. There are plans to share this during new resident, fellow and faculty orientations coming up. The success of “ideal communication” is also dependent on our systems on the receiving end. Please consider taking time to review with your practice team so procedures for these types of calls are clear.
And finally, we are celebrating some well-deserved pediatric recognition this spring ….
UC College of Medicine – Congratulations to Dr. Chris Peltier, Pediatric Associates of Mt. Carmel, who received the UC College of Medicine Alumnus of the Year award for 2022! You can view the likeness of Dr. Peltier and his fellow alumni honorees in a mural on Vine Street in OTR through March of 2023.
Cincinnati Pediatric Society – CPS will hold the annual awards dinner on May 15 this year. Honorees this year include Chris Cunha MD, Community Pediatrician recognition; Tasha Farqui MD, Emanuel Doyne Community Teaching Award; and Jessica Trygier MD, Outstanding Second Year Pediatric Resident Award. Congratulations to all! Contact Amanda Koehler (Amanda.koehler@cchmc.org) if you have questions about the event.
Thanks again for all you do for kids,
Shelly
