Letter from Shelly Voet, MD - Executive Community Physician Leader
March 25, 2024
Hello and happy Spring to all of you!
This March issue of Synapse includes links to multiple upcoming Cincinnati Children’s based educational opportunities and service updates. Please share with your staff the update regarding lab notifications if you use Cincinnati Children’s lab services. We have also included an introduction to the new pediatric interns who matched at Cincinnati Children’s this month. As a reminder, all these interns rely on our incredible teaching community to learn primary care in practice. If you have not yet done so, you can complete the teaching survey HERE (ideally by April 1st). National AAP is working to support community-based preceptors at all levels. As a first step, they have created a listserv for community-based education discussion. You can sign up by emailing Shelia Valadez at svaladez@aap.org. Thanks to all who teach our local medical students and residents!
Ohio AAP is also launching a new MOC IV eligible QI project titled “CARE2: Two generational health approach” for practices that provide care to both moms and children at the same site. The article in this issue details how to enroll.
It was great to see many of you at the Dermatology Intensive (co-sponsored by Cincinnati Pediatric Society) and the Medical Staff/Alumni dinner the weekend of March 15th! Several of the Dermatology talks resulted in new Community Practice Support tools, including a very helpful one on Hidradenitis suppurativa. You can find them on the app or on the new Healthcare Provider section of the Cincinnati Children’s website. Many thanks to Dr. Kalyani Marathe, director of the Division of Dermatology, and her team for taking their Friday to teach us the latest updates in dermatologic care.
I am also grateful to the Physician Outreach team led by Therese Martin, Medical Staff Services led by Kim Givens and our medical staff president Dr. Lesley Breech for coordinating the Medical Staff/Alumni dinner this month. Two outstanding alumni were honored - Dr. Maria Alonso for the meticulously skilled patient care and mentorship she provided in the Division of Pediatric Surgery for many years, and Dr. Chuck Schubert for his exceptional work to improve the health of underserved children locally and globally. Dr. Michael Farrell was honored for his 50 years of service to the children of Cincinnati, in both individual patient care and in hospital leadership. The crowd appreciated the sharing of the wisdom he has passed on through what have come to be known as “Farrellisms.” For those of us who had the privilege to train or work at Cincinnati Children’s with any of these incredible physicians, it was a motivating reminder of the privilege we have to practice pediatrics, especially in this community.
On that note, Happy Doctors Day March 30th to the physicians who are reading this and thank you for your leadership and commitment to serving the kids of our region so well.
Shelly
