Letter from Shelly Voet, MD - Executive Community Physician Leader

May 22, 2023

Hello! I hope all of you are enjoying the warm weather and the recognitions and celebrations that May brings.  Thanks for taking the time to read Synapse and our updates.

Access/Division Work – CPAC continues to meet with divisions with longer wait times. The key takeaway from these meetings is that the more detail you send in your referral, the better. Many divisions with longer wait times have developed internal triaging processes based on the history you provide. Some divisions reach out to families to help triage also, so encourage parents to document with pictures/videos as needed. We will continue to share additional guidance in Weekly Vitals.

Hypermobile EDS Clinic closure – The hEDS clinic is closing this month. Cincinnati Children’s is continuing to explore options for this population of patients. Dr. Melodie Blacklidge provided a Grand Rounds on hEDS identification and management on May 23. You can view the recording of the presentation HERE. Note- you need to have a CME Cloud account to view/obtain credit.

ED –As a reminder, providers (and staff who work with Cincinnati Children’s Community Associate/Active med staff) can now send electronic referrals via Epic Link to the ED, but an electronic referral should not be used for patients being referred for psychiatric evaluations, abuse evaluations, or those coming via EMS.

DEA Education Requirements – Beginning on June 27, 2023, providers initially applying or renewing their DEA registration form will have to affirm they have completed 8 hours of training on the treatment and management of opioid or other substance use disorders. Cincinnati Children’s has collated educational resources to help providers meet this requirement on this site -  DEA Training

Shiga Toxin + E. Coli – As we enter the summer months, the risk of STEC infections increases. There is now a Community Practice Support Tool focused on Bloody Diarrhea evaluation and treatment. Additionally, CCHMC is participating in an NIH funded, multi-national, crossover study to help determine how to best treat STEC. If you have a patient with STEC, you can reach Dr. David Schnadower (study PI) at (314) 780-8376 or David.schnadower@cchmc.org or McKayla Schloemer, study coordinator at (513) 803-9134 or mckayla.schloemer@cchmc.org. If your patient is enrolled in the study through an ED visit at CCHMC, your practice will be contacted by their team.

Daniel Drake Award - Congratulations to Dr. Marc Rothenberg, Division Director in Allergy and Immunology, on receiving the Daniel Drake Award from the University of Cincinnati.  You can read more in this issue.

Med Exec – For those on the medical staff at Cincinnati Children’s there are a few additional updates:

  • Last year, The Joint Commission announced that it had updated its standards to permit provider re-credentialling every 3 years instead of every 2. Cincinnati Children’s is transitioning to three-year credentialling over the next several years. General and Community Pediatrics (including Community Associate Med Staff) will re-credential in March of 2024.

  • Med Exec voted this month to continue to support the UC Urban Health Project, which partners first year UC medical students with non-profit health organizations in our region. You can learn more about the project HERE Home | Urban Health Project

  • Med Exec provided support for our recent East Side Meet and Greet event.

Finally, as we end Mental Health Awareness month, please take care of yourselves and your team. Remember that the Lindner Center for Hope offers confidential services to physicians in our region, which are partially supported by the large hospital systems in our area, including Cincinnati Children’s Med Staff. Additionally, providers licensed in Ohio can utilize the Ohio Professionals Health Program to obtain mental health screenings, community referrals, and educational resources. More information about the Ohio practitioner One Bite program for confidential substance use treatment is also available on their site HERE. Home | OhioPHP

Thanks for all you do.  Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns.

Shelly
